Understanding self-harm and suicidal thoughts

Self-harm is a way some people try to cope with overwhelming emotional pain, numbness, or a sense of losing control. It signals distress. It isn’t attention-seeking, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Suicidal ideation means having thoughts about not wanting to be alive, or about ending your life. These thoughts can be passing or persistent, and any of them is worth talking through. The two are related but not the same, and either can be serious. Only a licensed clinician can assess what someone needs.

Why these feelings happen

They rarely come from nowhere. Self-harm and suicidal thoughts are often tied to depression, anxiety, trauma, intense emotions, or sometimes substance use. They’re a response to unbearable pain, not a character flaw. The conditions underneath are treatable, and when substance use is involved, integrated care can address both at once.

It can get better

Pain that feels permanent very often isn’t. With the right support, many people find real relief and rebuild a life that feels worth living. Asking for help isn’t giving up. It’s a brave first step.

You’re not alone: signs it may be time to reach out

You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to get support. If any of these sound familiar, for you or someone you love, it may be time to reach out:

  • Urges to hurt yourself, or a sense of relief that feels tied to it
  • Frequent thoughts of not wanting to be here, or that others would be better off without you
  • Feeling hopeless, trapped, or like a burden
  • Pulling away from people and things you used to care about
  • Leaning on alcohol or other substances to get through the day

None of these mean something is wrong with you. They mean you’re carrying more than anyone should carry alone, and help for suicidal ideation is available in Illinois whenever you’re ready.

If you’re worried about someone you love

Signs a loved one may be struggling can include pulling away, giving away belongings, talking about being a burden, or a sudden calm after a long, dark stretch. Ask directly and without judgment. Asking about suicide does not plant the idea. Listen and stay with them, then help them reach support.

If you or someone else is in danger right now, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency room. Fox Valley is outpatient care, not an emergency service, but we’re here for what comes next.

How Fox Valley approaches self-harm treatment in Illinois

Once you’re safe, ongoing support helps address what’s underneath the pain, at your pace and never one-size-fits-all. Our programs are outpatient, not emergency or inpatient crisis care. If there’s immediate danger, 988 and the ER come first, and we help with what follows.

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is our most structured daytime support, for when you need more stabilization to feel steady again.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) can be a step down from PHP or a starting point of its own, and it balances treatment with work, school, and family.
  • Virtual IOP brings the same evidence-based care from home, easier to reach across Illinois and the northwest suburbs. Virtual care is for ongoing treatment, not emergencies. For a crisis, use 988 and the ER.

Many people move from PHP to IOP to Virtual IOP as they gain footing. Others start right where they are. Stepping between levels is a normal part of healing, not a setback.

Approaches many people find helpful

Everyone’s plan is different, but a few evidence-based approaches come up often:

  • DBT (dialectical behavior therapy): skills for riding out intense emotions and urges safely, often used for self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
  • CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy): shifting the painful thought patterns that keep the hurt going.
  • Individual and group therapy: being heard one-on-one and alongside people who understand.
  • Collaborative safety planning: a plan you build with a clinician for getting through the hardest moments.

Medication is considered only with a prescriber, when it’s the right fit. Many people find it helpful, and it’s always chosen with you, never promised as a cure.

When there’s more than one thing going on

Self-harm and suicidal thoughts often travel with depression, anxiety, or substance use. When they do, dual-diagnosis care treats everything together. If alcohol is part of the picture, our alcohol use disorder support can be woven in too.

What to expect when you reach out

Reaching out can feel like the hardest part, so we keep it simple and confidential.

The first call: dial (630) 703-0099 and a real person listens, with no pressure and no need for the “right words.”

Assessment: a clinician gently learns your history and what you’re hoping for. Together you choose a level of care and, when it helps, build a collaborative safety plan.

A plan built around you: care shaped to your life in Itasca or wherever you’re coming from. It adjusts as you progress, and we connect you to aftercare so support continues.

Insurance and paying for care

Cost should never be the reason you wait to reach out. We accept all PPO insurance plans. Contact us and we’ll verify your coverage confidentially, so you can focus on getting support.

Crisis mental health support across Illinois

Fox Valley is based in Itasca, in northeast Illinois, and offers crisis-aware mental health support to the communities around us. Neighbors come from just up the road in Wood Dale, from Addison minutes away, and from Medinah and Bloomingdale, a short drive to the west. We also welcome people from Roselle to the northwest, Bensenville to the southeast, and Elk Grove Village and Schaumburg, our neighbors nearby.

Wherever you are, help travels with you: 988 or the nearest ER reach support from anywhere in Illinois and beyond. And if you’re farther out, say over in Wheaton, or getting here isn’t easy, our Virtual IOP brings ongoing care to you without the drive.

Frequently asked questions about self-harm and suicidal ideation

What’s the difference between self-harm and suicidal thoughts?

Self-harm is a way some people cope with overwhelming emotional pain, and it isn’t always about wanting to die. Suicidal thoughts are thoughts of not wanting to be alive or of ending your life. They’re related but different, and either deserves support. Only a licensed clinician can assess what’s really going on.

What should I do if I’m having thoughts of suicide right now?

Please reach out right now. Call or text 988 to talk with a trained counselor any time, free and confidential. If you’re in immediate danger, go to the nearest emergency room. Reaching out is a strength, and Fox Valley is here for ongoing care once you’re safe.

How is self-harm treated?

There’s no single path, but self-harm treatment often includes DBT, CBT, individual and group therapy, and collaborative safety planning, alongside care for any underlying depression or anxiety. These are options many people find helpful, matched to you.

How can I help someone who is self-harming or talking about suicide?

Ask directly and without judgment, and take it seriously. Asking about suicide does not plant the idea. Help them connect to 988 (for them or for you), or the nearest ER in an emergency. They can also reach Fox Valley at (630) 703-0099.

Do you offer virtual or online support for suicidal ideation in Illinois?

Yes. Our Virtual IOP brings the same evidence-based care to your home, so suicidal ideation help is easier to reach across Illinois and nearby towns for Illinois residents. One important note: virtual care is for ongoing treatment, not emergencies. For a crisis, use 988 and the ER.

Will insurance cover self-harm or suicidal ideation treatment?

Coverage varies by plan. Fox Valley accepts all PPO insurance plans, and the surest way to know your benefits is to verify your coverage.
